Recent Events

LA: Intercontinental

TIPS7.21.10 | Intercontinental -- July in Los Angeles was no time to be cooped up in a dark club lit only by the glow of iPhones. So this month TIPS took you to a sprawling outdoor garden lit by the glow of billowing gas fire pits and … iPhones. This gorgeously landscaped marvel, located in the back yard of the Intercontinental Century City, offered a soothing respite from the 10 and 405 freeways that you probably took to get there. SF: Americano

TIPS7.7.10 | Americano -- This July marked the 43rd anniversary of San Francisco's "Summer of Love." Didn't see it coming? Don't worry. We did. And to show you some love of our own, we snagged a venue with an outdoor patio that looks out on the majestic sweep of the Bay Bridge. Because everyone looks good in afternoon light. Yes, even pasty dot-com'ers. That's why we came out and soaked up some love among our fellow TIPSsters. It's what Haight-Ashbury 1.0 would have wanted. NYC: Maritime Hotel

TIPS6.29.10 | Maritime Hotel -- It was official: Change was coming to New York. The financial regulation bill was due to land on Obama's desk by Independence Day, and we were betting that all that newly-mandated financial transparency would prove a major buzz-kill on parts of Wall Street. So to keep the mood buoyant and sprightly, we planted our flag on the gorgeous roof deck of the South Cabana at the Maritime Hotel. This open-air space has been awarded all manner of 'Best Roofdeck' awards in city publications. It was the perfect place to trot out your old CDOs and other sketchy derivatives and give them one last airing before they were needed as outhouse wallpaper. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: K Street Lounge

TIPS6.24.10 | K Street Lounge -- The senate passed the financial-reform bill, which meant the start of the real fun: Watering down all the provisions that pose any threat of, you know, reforming the financial system. To do that of course, you need lobbyists. Lots and lots of lobbyists. And where better to find them than ... K Street? Which is -- conveniently -- where we hosted this month's TIPS party: It was the K Street lounge. We came on out and tossed back a few with some young alum friends -- before there were no provisions left to weaken.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA: Bar210

TIPS6.17.10 | Bar210 -- We raged, raged against the onset of 'June Gloom' by luxuriating in the newest incarnation at the Beverly Hilton: Bar210 -- the Tom Ford-designed lounge situated in the space formerly occupied by Trader Vic's. Gone were the tiki torches and vintage surf films. In their place were modern design essentials like llavish plum, black fig and Byzantium fabrics. (Don't ask.) We came for the collegiate fellowship, we stayed for the Spanish goat hair pillows. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Circa

TIPS6.10.10 | Circa -- This being the Bay Area, it's a decent bet you're reading this on your iPad. That being the case, we commemorated the launch of that luscious piece of hardware by hosting this event at a place that takes design almost as seriously as the folks in Cupertino. We're talking about Circa -- the restaurant lounge designed by Michael Brennan, the artistic powerhouse behind some of San Fran's most beautiful restaurants, including including Cortez, Jardiniere, Farallon, Le Petit Robert and Tartare. We put down our iPads and came out to mix it up with some friends in real life. Because there's no app for that. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Manor West

TIPS5.20.10 | Manor West -- Yes, we're aware: When May time rolls around in San Francisco, it's hard to think about anything else besides donning a pink gorilla suit for the Bay to Breakers race. Well we kept the gorilla suits handy after the race and brought them with us to this month's TIPS bash. It was a funky contrast to the slick, swanky atmosphere of our venue: Manor West. There we were able to regale our friends with tales of running through 27 San Francisco micro-climates over the course of the race. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: One Lounge

TIPS5.20.10 | One Lounge -- Drink prices in Dupont Circle have been edging inexorably skyward ever since neighborhood bars realized that Carrie Bradshaw-wannabees exist in the nation's capital, too. Yes, we feel your pain. Message: We care. This month TIPS struck a blow against the $27 Cosmo-tini by unfurling our banner at One Lounge -- home of the best high-class happy hour in town.

We enjoyed specialty martini for the price of a beer and micro-brew beers for the price of fries. Call it the recession special. Good thing you we got here when we did: We hear economic recovery is right around the corner. And once that happens, Cosmo prices have nowhere to go but up... TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: The Hudson

TIPS5.18.10 | The Hudson -- Were these the End Times? Were those the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping down Broadway? Well you Wall Street'ers seemed to think so -- what with Big-Bad-Obama trying to take away your CDOs and all...So if this was the end of the gravy train for de-regulated derivatives, it was definitely time to live it up bit before ya'll had to start being, you know, responsible. And wed had  the place, too: Hudson Hotel -- that of the massive yellow neon wall, indoor park and wet library. A fitting symbol for an age of extravagance. We came out and enjoyed it. While you still could. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

LA: Kiva Spring Fundraiser

TIPS5.15.10 | Kiva Spring Fundraiser -- Our first TIPS Spring Charity Ball was truly a night to remember! Sequins, glitter, and sharp suits decorated the night, champagne glasses clinked and bubbled, and the rhythms of DJ Juliett brought everyone to the dance floor.  Our venue for the night was Evo’s premier Penthouse, a fantastic space sparkling with breath-taking 360-degree panoramic views of the downtown city skyline.

Thanks to everyone who turned out in support of KIVA!  Every ticket purchased directly helped an entrepreneur in the developing world.  Please check out Kiva's website and consider making a $25 loan: kiva.org

A special shout-out of thanks to DJ Juliett and photographer Robbie Schaeffer for donating their services for the event.

Click on any of the thumbnails below to see the glitter & smiles from the night.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Sloane

TIPS4.29.10 | Sloane -- We know, we know: It was a traumatic week: Creaky cable car lines were getting shut down for months at a time and marijuana-legalization went going on the ballot. But in the meantime TIPS had a party to promote: We went to Sloane, a place that's not quite a bar, not quite a club, not quite an Unobtanium mine. We came out and tossed back a few drinks with some of our fellow young alumni. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: Hudson

TIPS4.22.10 | Hudson -- The warm spring weather made the perfect setting for our April TIPS event and a more social reconciliation than the one Washington just witnessed with the most bitterly-contested bill-passage since the passage of Bill C through the impeachment hearings. We planted a flag at Hudson, a place named after the river that divides New York and New Jersey as turbulently as the healthcare law divides Washington -- and we were pleased to see Republicans and Dems alike come together for drinks & laughs.  Cards were exchanged, friends were made, cocktails downed, and a good time was had by all.  Stay tuned for the best events of the year as the warm summer weather draws all the TIPS-ers out of their winter hibernation.  Click on the thumbnails below to launch a slideshow of event pics.
TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Olivia Fox Cabane Presentation

TIPS4.21.10 | Olivia Fox Cabane Presentation -- You never get a second chance to make a great first impression; so you'd better get it right the first time. TIPS wants helped you out on that score: We secured Forbes columnist and internationally renowned speaker Olivia Fox Cabane for her keynote presentation: The Science of Trust, Influence and Persuasion. This workshop covered the science of charisma; the keys to making fantastic first impressions, and the secrets to having that "boardroom presence" to quickly establish credibility, trust, and rapport. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: 230 Fifth

TIPS4.20.10 | 230 Fifth -- Now that it finally got warm enough to socialize outside at night without wearing arctic expedition gear, TIPS took it outdoors: We set up shop at 230 Fifth, whose rooftop garden is consistently voted as the best in New York. If you were huddling inside your apartment all winter, or if you felt stifled by the oppressive heat of basement dance halls, it was time for you to head up to the roof, take in the eye-dropping view, and kick back with some friends old and new. Because we had about six seconds before the onset of the sweltering summer.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA: Cache

TIPS4.7.10 | Cache -- We know, we know: you were all still agog about this year's truly historic movie awards season: A woman, for the first time ever ... won both an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year (Bullock. "Blind Side" + "All About Steve"). But you had tolet it go. Turned out she was fine. (There were plenty of truly horrific Mad Libs-generated romantic comedy scripts floating around CAA for her to pick off one by one.) Meanwhile, there was socializing to be done on the west side. That's right, it had been ages since we hit up Santa Monica, so this month we planted a flag on the west side -- in the venue that used to be owned by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Back then it was Schatzi. Next it was Hidden. Now it's Caché. (Which is, of course, French for caché.) In any case, this time the owners got it right: multiple stepped patios, eye-popping extended firepits, intimate nooks and crannies ... all steps from Main Street. So, we came on out and yukked it up with people who were capable of pronouncing French accent marks.  Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: Tenjune

TIPS3.31.10 | Tenjune -- Ok, Ok. So New York saw the downfall of both its governor and its longest-serving congressman in the same week. But wasn't all doom-and-gloom: the city's unemployment rate tumbled from 10.5% to 10.4%. That's point-one percent! Time to break out the bubbly and party! And boy, did TIPS have the venue for you: Tenjune -- that famously impossible-to-get-into Meatpacking district fixture. We celebrated a changing of the political guard and a return to new economic optimism in a place so sizzling that even its website is not-safe-for-work. And, oh ... about the club's name: Its two owners share a birthday on June 10th. So there. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: Current

TIPS3.25.10 | Current -- So congress members were posturing like peacocks over healthcare; so the IRS was under attack; so Sarah Palin was reading palms (hey, at least she was reading!) ... We forgot about all that for a moment. Because The Ivy Plus Society offered a respite from all the madness at new Asian fusion lounge Current. Cool aquatic themes. Sushi and saki bombs. It was enough to get our minds off the freakish snow storms that had DC looking like a scene out of "The Day After Tomorrow." So we set aside partisan bickering and 2012-handicapping long enough to swill some cocktails with our fellow young alumni! Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Cellar360

TIPS3.25.10 | Cellar360 -- TIPS shook things up this month with an entirely new party format: Wine Tasting! We swilled away at Cellar360, a mecca to all things vino in Fisherman's Wharf. We impressed people with our expertise of mid-century vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Montrachet. And those of us who have never paid more than $2 for a bottle (2 Buck Chuck @ Trader Joe's) dropped on by to see what the people in "Sideways" were going on about. While sampling the various fares, we also enjoyed breath-taking views of the bay and Alcatraz. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: Marquee

TIPS2.24.10 | Marquee -- February is the month when Cupid unsheathes his longbow and goes looking for targets. Did you make his short-list? Well, you upped your chances by attending the TIPS party at Marquee -- a place with such flattering lighting that even pallid, pasty New York winter skin looks downright Malibu. It was ten days after Valentine's Day, so we're guessing there was a lot of low-hanging fruit with Cupid hangovers still on the vine.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: The Republic

TIPS2.23.10 | The Republic -- With all the talk about Valentine's Day, February made for a lousy month to sit at home alone in front of your computer, watching re-runs of The Office on Hulu, using WiFi that you were stealing from your upstairs neighbor, whom you'd never had the courage to say 'hello' to. TIPS offered an alternative to that self-imposed solipsism: A party with your fellow young alumni in a new Pacific Heights eatery. So we put our MacBook to sleep, dragged a comb across your hair, and meet up with friends old and new at The Republic! Click on any of the thumbnails below to see the all the pictures.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: L2 Lounge

TIPS2.16.10 | L2 Lounge -- February is the month when the Hallmark company wants you to feel bad about being alone -- and tries to convince you that a $4, pre-inscribed greeting card is the most authentic, creative way to express your true feelings toward your significant other(s). It's quite a racket, and we're very impressed. TIPS humbly presented an alternative: Grab a single friend and bring him or her to the L2 Lounge. There were plenty of well-educated, dynamic, over-achievers eager to chase away the Valentine's Day blues. Those who played their cards right got hit by Cupid's arrow. Click any of the images below to see all the pictures.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA: Voyeur

TIPS2.9.10 | Voyeur -- To celebrate February, the month when Cupid draws his bow, TIPS took you into the heart of the most darkly romantic and fetishized hot spot in Los Angeles. Yes, Voyeur: where the decor is provocative enough to make Cupid himself blush. It was the perfect spot for the month of romance -- LA style!

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: Project One

TIPS1.27.10 | Project One -- A new decade dawned, and TIPS continued to shake things up. We threw our monthly bash at an art gallery / dance space with trappings guaranteed to start the 2010s off with a jolt: eye-popping 3-D paintings, multimedia art installations, and a massive dance floor. What's more, we had drink specials all night (think Soju-infused pink lemonade and a half dozen variations on mojitos). It was the perfect way to trade stories with your fellow young alums about Christmas bonuses wasted and New Year's resolutions broken.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: Local 16

TIPS1.21.10 | Local 16 -- We at TIPS knew that the advent of this new decade was going to be unsettling in all sorts of ways: For starters, we didn't even have a name for previous decade; and once we did, VH1 was going to start paying tribute to it with all manner of nostalgic fluff. Nobody needed that right now. So as a palliative against all this tumult, TIPS kicked off 2010 at the most soothing place we could find: Local 16. It's for locals. They use local veggies and meats in their appetizers. And they've got the best zen-inspiring roof garden in the city. We all took a load off after our holiday travels and came to a place where we felt like a local.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: La Pomme

TIPS1.20.10 | La Pomme -- The dawning of a new decade offered plenty of opportunities for re-invention: new fads, new haunts, new friends. We changed up all three at TIPS' first party of 2010. We held court at La Pomme, the brand-spanking-new Chelsea club that sports edgy, avant-garde art and thrilling sonic soundscapes. We sampled the new space while tossing back a few cocktails with some new friends. New York keeps re-inventing itself; and you did, too! Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA: h.wood

TIPS1.13.10 | h.wood -- It was the dawn of a new decade in Los Angeles -- a time to actually follow through on your New Year's resolutions: to be more social; venture out beyond your neighborhood; maybe go to a bar with a strangely punctuated name.

For all those options, at least, TIPS had you covered. We kicked off the 2010s at h.wood -- a laid-back Hollywood bar whose old-school leather couches and retro decor lend themselves to organic social lubrication. Perfect for meeting some new friends in a new decade and a new frame of mind. TIPS set the scene. Following through on the resolutions is up to you. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: The Reserve

TIPS12.16.09 | The Reserve -- You know how every new frat bar on M street calls itself a "lounge" -- just because it doesn't have stale peanuts and a neon Miller High Life sign? Yeah, that annoys us, too. That's why we selected an ACTUAL lounge as the venue of this month's TIPS party: The Reserve. We geared up for the holiday-season madness by LOUNGING with our fellow young alumni in style and comfort. We then indulged in the holiday fun with alumni friends new and old, enjoying holiday drink specials, laughs, and one of the Reserve's beautiful wine flights.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: Greenhouse

TIPS12.14.09 | Greenhouse -- We kicked off the holiday season by giving a little something back: No, we didn't return our bonuses. Instead, we gave something back to Mother Earth -- by reveling at Greenhouse, New York City's first green night club. The banging sound system was powered by wind-powered electricity; the eye-popping visual displays were made from LEDs, the staff's outfits were fashioned out of eco-friendly material made by Bono's wife. Here, every cocktail you buy was a vote for a greener future. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

SF: The Parlor

TIPS12.09.09 | The Parlor -- We kicked it with our friends while kicking back some aid to those in need -- by coming on out for The Ivy Plus Society Holiday Benefit Party. All proceeds benefited Youth and Family Enrichment Services, a regional nonprofit that helps children, youths and adults build life skills and attain self-sufficiency. Knowing that our door fee went to a good cause made the yummy desserts taste even better. And if the recession had us mumbling a bit of 'bah, humbug,' this was just the thing we needed to kick our better instincts into gear. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA:Holiday Penthouse

TIPS12.05.09 | LA Holiday Penthouse -- We broke out our jingle bells, mistletoe, and holiday cheer for our most fabulous holiday party yet.

Our penthouse venue was the crown jewel at Evo – downtown’s hottest new loft development. Our home for the night was the lavish penthouse suite with breath-taking 360-degree panoramic views of the downtown city skyline and LA Live (only two blocks away). This penthouse was AMAZING. Marble, polished concrete, a huge outdoor deck, soaring ceilings, stunning views…. And it was all ours for the night.

We brought in professional set decorators to transform the Penthouse halls into our winter wonderland. DJ'd music and a dedicated dance space kept the party rocking, and holiday games & activities added to the holiday cheer. Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch a photo slideshow.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: George

TIPS11.19.09 | George -- For The Ivy Plus Society's second Washington DC young alum party, we spun the night away at Georgetown's newest exclusive hot spot: George. Over 300 people turned out for the Georgetown bash, enjoying each other's company with free appetizers and drink specials all night long.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: Cain Luxe

TIPS11.19.09 | Cain Luxe -- We know, we know: It was freakishly cold this month. Leaving your apartment was like gearing up for Everest base camp without a sherpa. But TIPS provided refuge in Africa – errr, an African-themed club, that is. We de-thawed with our fellow alumni at Cain Luxe, the closest you can get to a savannah on the far west side in November.
TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA:Bar Marmont

TIPS11.11.09 | Bar Marmont -- It was a sell-out crowd for our most popular event of the year: The TIPS soiree at Bar Marmont -- the classic-yet-trendy cocktail lounge at the fabled Chateau Marmont Hotel. From Howard Hughes to Jim Morrison to Lindsay Lohan, the Marmont has played host to the desperate-to-be-seen and those wishing to remain unseen. And unless you belong to the latter category, you'll probably find yourself in our photo set for the night -- which you can access by clicking on any of the thumbnails below!

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

Taverna Aventine

TIPS10.24.09 | Taverna Aventine -- With the city’s economy starting to show some spunk again, there was no better time to party it up at a Gold Rush-era pleasure den. For our October event, TIPS reveled at Taverna Aventine, a Barbary Coast-inspired social club that took the edge off any of our lingering economic woes — at least for a night. We joined our fellow alumni for a romp through San Francisco’s nautical history and soaked up old world stylings while sipping on classic cocktails.

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: The Griffin

TIPS 10.21.09 | The Griffin -- In New York, the return of autumn -- and the return of the well-heeled from the Hamptons -- usually means a return to job hiring. Maybe not so much this year. But look on the bright side: there's a great new word making the rounds that’s turning unemployment on its head: funemployment. It means having a good time with your down time. We had a chance to try it out on your fellow young alumni at the October TIPS party at The Griffin. And if that didn't work, we could always paraphrase Homer Simpson as we raise a toast: "To Wall Street: The cause of, and solution to, all life’s problems." Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch the slideshow!

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

DC: Lux Lounge

TIPS10.16.09 | Lux Lounge-- In spite of the rain, over 450 DC young alums turned out in full force to celebrate the launch of our DC TIPS chapter with our inaugural event at Lux Lounge.

We celebrated with dessert and Ivy cocktails, hit the dance floor, and cocktailed the connecting night away.  Smiles and laughs filled the TIPS DC night as we toasted friends, new and old.  If you joined the fun, click on any of the thumbnails below to find your smile amidst the revelry.  If you missed out, check out the fun and hope to catch you next month at Georges for Round Two!

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

LA: Rush Street

TIPS10.14.09 | Rush Street -- For our October TIPS event, we headed to the spot that made Culver City cool again. That’s right: We used “Culver City” and “cool” in the same sentence. Skeptical? Then check out these pictures of your fellow young alumni at Rush Street, and we think you’ll agree. Not only did we canoodle on the outdoor deck, we gave a few spins around the tantalizing surprise smack dab in the middle of the upstairs lounge -- conjuring memories of ‘swinging’ college parties of yore. It was a great way to shake off those post-summer blues. Click on the thumbnails below to see all the pictures!

TIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPSTIPS

NYC: The Gates

TIPS 9.29.09 | The Gates -- Just about every university has a famous gate somewhere on campus, so it seemed apt that this September, TIPS invited you to pass through The Gates and head back to school to mix and connect with Ivy Plus young alums.  Through The Gates, we found an evening of connecting, conversation, (and of course cocktails) with a group of dynamic Ivy Plus peers. Click on the thumbnails below to see all the pictures!

TIPS 9.24.09 | Melt -- For our September party, we headed to Palo Alto for some fab Silicon Valley networking and connecting. We had a terrific turnout at our first Silicon Valley party in June and had an even bigger group this time -- full of VC execs, entrepreneurs, other business/tech leaders, and, most importantly, just a group of fun, fabulous folks! LA: The Standard

TIPS 9.22.09 | LA: The Standard -- For our September TIPS party, we headed back to school -- on the pool deck of the ever-chic Standard Hotel on Sunset. We soaked up the last rays of summer sunshine while sporting prep school girl/boy attitude.  Ladies donned plaid headbands, scarfs, skirts and knee socks, etc.  Gentleman wore Burberry, polo shirts, plaid ties, penny loafers and blazers.  Many of our revelers kept with the scholarly theme of the night by striking extra-studious poses in our pictures.  Click on any of the thumbnails below to launch the slideshow of the night's preppy fun!

SF: Matrix

TIPS 8.28.09 | SF: Matrix -- TIPS finally made it out to the Marina on Friday to the classic haunt, Matrix.  Matrix has been hot for some time and did not disappoint. The low mood lighting, the fashionable crowd (that’s you!) and the great drink specials kept the party rocking in to the night.  Click on the thumbnails below to launch the slideshow of the night’s fun.

NY: The Hotel Gansevoort

TIPS8.24.09 | The Hotel Gansevoort -- For our August TIPS party, we headed skyward and turned our faces up to the cool breezes streaming over the Gansevoort’s roof deck bar and lounge. There was no better way to slip into the week than a rooftop cocktail and some connecting with our favorite Ivy Plus alums – new and old. Whether you were there to network your way to a new date, job, or deal – or just coming to soak up the NYC skyline and share a laugh with our old school friends – hopefully this gorgeous setting did you right.

LA: Shangri-La Pool Party

TIPS8.16.09 | LA: Shangri-La Pool Party -- Ladies donned their cutest bikinis and gents sported their darkest shades at Santa Monica’s hottest new summer destination: the Shangri-la Pool. Amidst a backdrop of tanned friends, fruity cocktails and bouncing beach balls, we splashed it up during a classic Southern California afternoon. SF: Enrico's

TIPS7.23.09 | Enrico's -- The TIPS summer line up continued at the classic SF haunt, Enrico’s. On a cool summer night, TIPsters mingled and warmed up inside with stiff drinks and yummy nibbles. Out on the patio under the heat lamps was a good spot for intimate conversations.  Click on the photos below to check out all of the beautiful and talented TIPSers.

NY: The Park

TIPS7.22.09 | The Park -- The TIPS fun continued this July with our play date at The Park Penthouse. Alumni friends new and old enjoyed the rooftop views over cocktails while making new connections and scattering cards hither-and-thither around the July night.  Perhaps the party brought you a new partner, capital source, date, or friend… but at the very least, we hope it delivered smiles, laughs, and a chance to show off those fab new (shoes/cards/jacket/pick-up lines…).  Click on the thumbnails below to launch the slideshow of the night’s smiles.

LA: Crown Bar

TIPS7.16.09 | Crown Bar -- TIPS summer nights continued this month at Crown Bar with another laughing, smiling night. School may be out for summer, but all our fave, fun alums were still in session for summer cocktails on the patio and chandeliered booths inside.  We heard from a few star-crossed lovers looking for the digits of lads & ladies who had escaped before cards were exchanged (don’t worry, we would never release info)… so we know there were at least a few cxns stirring in the house that night.   Next time, make sure to “close” before the pumpkin hour arrives. Click on the thumbnails below to launch a slideshow of event smiles!

SF: W Hotel

NY: Maritime Hotel

TIPS6.23.09 | Maritime Hotel -- The Maritime Hotel Cabanas were the perfect setting for a night of networking-mingling-laughing-cocktailing – aka, a signature TIPS night.  NYC alums filled the summer night with smiles matching the venue’s tropical-themed, open-air easy-breezy feel.  Any good stories from the night?  Fabulous connections, dates, gossip-worthy ‘Spotted!’ moments?  Email us with your fave tales from the night.  Click on the thumbnails below to see the rest of the night’s pearly whites and see you next month at The Park!

LA: Coco deVille

TIPS05.27.09 | Coco deVille -- Hovering between spring and summer, we danced our way out of one warm, breezy season and into the next blazing LA summer. Coco definitely lived up to its hype as ultra-fabulous and super swank (just like you TIPS-ers). Citysearch says “Enter this basement bar and lounge underneath STK, and you might feel as though you've stumbled down Wonderland's rabbit hole--except it's populated with Hollywood glitterati instead of the White Rabbit and company. The psychedelic, Pucci-esque decor is a kaleidoscope of colors, laced with a mishmash of bold prints in shocking pink and electric blue that enhance the intimate spot's kitschy look.”  And we like our TIPS glitterati even better than the usual Hollywood froo-froo which usually fill this hot spot!  So, until next time TIPSers, enjoy the free goodies in your gift bags courtesy of Beautyfix.com and click on the thumbnails below to check out the flirting-laughing-connecting-digit exchanging of the night.

LA: Green Door

TIPS4.21.09 | Green Door -- For our April young alum playdate, we were off to Hollywood to go frolic at Green Door, a gem on the Hollywood nightlife scene.  What were we celebrating this month?  How about…with all this depression talk, since we’re not there yet, we decided to go for a spree and party like it’s still the Jazz Age ‘20s.  Behind this very special Hollywood Green Door, we found a living room and outdoor patio right out of an 18th c. French Chateau bubbling over with the laughter of LALA TIPSers...

SF: Supper Club

TIPS3.27.09 | Supper Club-- We said Supper Club needed to be experienced and what an experience it was. LA: Cabana Club

TIPS3.18.09 | Cabana Club -- March took us to Cabana Club to chase away the spring showers with a March martini or 3 at our favorite tropical Hollywood retreat.  Palm trees swayed, TIPS-ers gabbed, drinks were had, and the spring night flew by.  Check out all the night's smiles by clicking on the thumbnails below to launch the slideshow of event pics.

LA: Saturday Pre-Party at Studio BeautyMix at Fred Segal

TIPS3.7.09 | Fred Segal -- Saturday night got off to a beautiful start with our Studio BeautyMix Fred Segal pre-party in Santa Monica.  Huge thanks to Charlie Perer and all the Studio staff for making this event happen!  Barefoot Wine kept the sparkling drinks flowing as party guests worked with a host of professional artists offering complimentary make-overs, hair styling, facials, hand massage, and more.  Chocolates, pastries and cookies kept the munchies at bay, we let the music play, and made our way out for Saturday night armed with fab make-overs and all the latest beauty trends.  Gift bags for all made for a great start to the weekend – who doesn’t love freebies when the economic sky is falling outside?  And, ladies, Wow!  You all looked gorgeous!  (guys too, but you don’t really want to be called gorgeous do you?) Response to this event was huge – tickets sold out in less than a week – so we’ll try to plan another one soon, promise!  Click on the thumbnails below to check out the rest of the event photos.

SF: Station House

TIPS2.28.09 | Station House -- For our February party, we rocked Station House – a fantastic, private venue that we had all to ourselves. LA: Valentine's at Stone Rose

TIPS2.10.09 | Stone Rose-- Roses are red, violets are blue, I went to a fancy school, how ‘bout you?  For February – month of romance, love, and all things red, pink, and mushy, we hit up Rande Gerber’s Stone Rose Bar at the Sofitel. Did anyone find their Mr./Ms. Right, Right-Now, or All-Right, You’ll Do for Now?  Definitely looked like there were some pairings in the air… Thanks to Sweet Riot, we had deep, dark chocolate flowing all night long, so one way or another, there was a bit of sugar for everyone.  Click on the photos below to check out the rest of the night’s matchings.

SF: 111 Minna Gallery

TIPS1.29.09 | 111 Minna Gallery -- This month we shook off the post holiday winter blues and kicked 2009 into high gear with our favorite TIPsters. 111 Minna with its thought provoking art this gallery/bar/lounge was the perfect place to get our conversation on. Can't wait to see everyone next month. Click below for more pictures.

LA: Les Deux

TIPS1.7.09 | Les Deux-- Les Deux definitely left us with a new fave TIPS party-base! With its gorgeous outdoor living room dripping in red light, Les Deux was the perfect spot for TIPSers to get together to usher in 2009. No post-holiday-party-season-depression for this bubbling crowd. We gotta agree with the LA Times who says “the nostalgia here is so now. The scene could be 1920s Paris except for all the young Hollywood royals who are making it… Maybe the reason Christina Aguilera, the Hilton sisters, Joaquin Phoenix and Eva Longoria are repeat customers is the succulent lighting. Even a toad would look handsome at Les Deux, but more than likely, you'll be meeting princes and princesses.” So... anyone have any tails of prince or princess meetings? Do tell. We're always happy to publish any good party gossip/ tales in our recaps, so send us anything story-worthy for next time: events@ivyplussociety.org.

LA- Holiday Party at James Gray Gallery

TIPS12.13.08 | James Gray Gallery --Ho! Ho! Holiday Party! Our Holiday Party Night brimmed with mistletoe, sparkling cocktails, melting chocolate, stunning art, and even more stunning young alums. Bullet-Proof Gentleman and Shimmering Ladies: y’all clean up very well!…LA needs more excuses to turn out satiny cocktail dressed ladies and sharp jacketed boys! Thanks to budding flower design superstar (‘scuse the pun, couldn’t resist) Stephanie Jones (Yale ’00), the gallery was decorated with gorgeous flowers… and of course the TIPSers in the house took care of decorating the night with laughing smiles and holiday cheer. Special thanks to Red Bull, Fulfilled Pastries, Barefoot Wine, and Sweet Riot Chocolate for helping to fuel our holiday fun! Merry Holidays to All and Look forward to dancing through many more TIPS nights together in 2009!

Sky Bar – West Hollywood

Kress10.28.08 | Sky Bar -- This month, we went for one more Sky Bar Dance before the year ends…  As usual, Sky Bar did not disappoint.  The party was absolutely brimming with 400 fabulous young alums and enough gorgeous views and peops to go around for all.  We had the entire place all to our special selves, making for a smashing Sunset night to remember.  Skybar, with its open air, ivy-covered pavilion perched above the Pool and Outdoor Living Room, has been one of LA's hottest nightspots from the day it opened.  With its simple tin roof, rustic log beams and “schoolhouse” style wood furniture, it appears to almost float in the clouds, boasting some of the finest views around.  We vote this as our all-time fave venue to date.  What do you think?  Well, until next time, Take Care Sky Bar.  See you in ’09!

PaliHouse: LA

Kress10.21.08 | PaliHouse -- Let’s see…what was our excuse for partying on a school-night this month?  How about…we were either laid off (so we had no excuse not to take advantage of our new-found ability to sleep-in on Wednesday morning) or we have not been laid off (so we had to come out to celebrate the fact that we still have jobs and buy drinks for all our unemployed friends).  Either way, it made for another fabulous TIPS-y night.  PaliHouse lived up to its promise as a new gem on the West Hollywood scene.  Daily Candy calls it “a modern, rustic nod to the New Orleans French Quarter.”  Whatever.  It’s pretty; you’re pretty.  Fun night.  See ya next month!

Back to School at Kress

Kress09.30.08 | Kress -- We kicked off the fall with a killer Back to School Party on the rooftop of Hollywood’s hottest club of the moment - Kress. Just a few friends…about 500 at final count. Summer may be over, but this being LA - land of eternal summer and perfect weather and all – we enjoyed a balmy Hollywood night with perfect rooftop breezes and cocktails. Summer at the Tropicana

IMG_901308.20.08 | Tropicana -- TIPS kept our summer celebrations in full swing and headed to the Tropicana Bar at the infamous Roosevelt hotel for an evening of poolside play. This remains one of the hottest venues in town and a favorite of TIPS alums.  We packed the place with 300+ coeds and basked in the laid-back Hollywood glamour of the poolside bar. Shining lights illuminated fluttering palm-tree branches and TIPS alums filled the cozy, fireside outdoor den.  P.S. who saw Marilyn Manson?  The DJ that kicked up at 9 is in his band; guess he came down to say hello.  Not our usual TIPS guest, but hey, we're a welcoming bunch...

Summer Nights on Sunset

Bar Marmont07.30.08 | Bar Marmont -- TIPS summer nights on Sunset continued with July’s Ivy Plus young alumni party at Bar Marmont, aka “Chateau Marmont’s sexy, sinister sister.” This party was too fabulous for its own britches, overflowing Bar Marmont and filling the place to brimming. Thanks to all for bringing your go-with-the-flow party spirit to the night and turning lemons to lemon drops. One more evening sip-swig-swilled away with laughing friends, old and new.

!May Day! Mixer

Purple Lounge05.28.2008 | S Bar -- For our May young alum mixer, we were off to Hollywood to frolic at SBE’s latest foray into all things hot in LA nightlife: S Bar.  LA.com croons:  “Further pioneering and refining the nightlife milieu, SBE and Philippe Starck are an unstoppable force with their latest collaboration, S Bar…. Groups of S Bar-hoppers are seated in mismatched chairs at a giant white cross-shaped table to maximize the socializing and minimize the pretentiousness.  Wall-sized canvases with photos by French photographer Patrick Tourneboeuf frame the whimsical room lit by colorful upside-down lamps.  And if that isn't trippy enough, Alice in Wonderland (and other choice movies) are playing on a TV in the bathroom…on the ceiling.  Hmmm, no one really knows what the S in S Bar stands for, so let's just pretend it stands for Superfabulous – because that's exactly what it is.”  After our super-fabulous party-filled-S Bar night, we agree!

The sun sparkled on the pool until sunset brought out the sparkling city lights below. We had the pool deck and upper ivy-covered pavilion all to ourselves, making this a classic Sunset night to remember. The classic, famed Skybar, with its open air, poolside outdoor living room, was the perfect match for all you fabulous TIPS-ies. Definitely one of our best parties yet. Purple Lounge03.27.2008 | SEVEN -- For our March young alum mixer, we were off to WeHo to fill our night with as many of the 7 deadly sins as we could at the nightspot du jour:
S E V E N. Luxuria (extravagance/lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride) – we collected ‘em all. Entering, S e v e n you pass through a narrow corridor lined with river rock and into a design sanctuary of raw woods, candlelit lighting and stone accents. Mistletoe & Cocktails

Mistletoe and Cocktails 200712.15.2007 | WILLIAM TURNER GALLERY -- Never one to miss the chance to throw a fabulous party, The Ivy Plus Society celebrated the holiday season with a mistletoe-filled night of cocktails, dessert, art, & music. At December’s holiday celebration, young alums donned their holiday finest and decorated the night with laughs, running to (and occasionally from) the mistletoe.

We filled the night with cheer and champagne at the William Turner Gallery at Bergamot Station - a former trolley station which has been transformed into one of LA’s most famous and unique arts complexes. The gallery featured an exhibition by Curtis Ripley Nocturnes & Preludes. Click here for a re-cap of the exhibition.

Downtown Mixer

Seven Grand11.13.2007 | SEVEN GRAND -- November took us to a Downtown Bar dispensing Uptown Booze, where we tapped the blooming but still edgy downtown scene. This dark, chocolately hunting lodge is definitely one of the sexier venues we have landed.

LA Weekly noted that “There is definitely a bookish, masculine vibe to the place...the kind of joint you'd find in Fitzgerald, Hemingway, or Miller (Henry, not Arthur)... a great place to drink bourbon, puff on a cigar and pretend to be in an imaginary boys club. Even if you're a girl.”

We found all this & more to be true and 200+ TIPS cats grooved the night away, swigging whiskey & wine beneath the watchful gaze of the stuffed jack-a-lopes on the wall. Somewhere in the deep, dark booths, ringed by the Scotish plaid, chandeliers glinting above the velvet green of the pool tables, surely secrets were exchanged and promises made. Live jazz giving the night a smooth finish and sending us off into the quiet, still downtown night on the notes of a sax.

Trends in Television Panel

10.27.2007 | FOX STUDIOS -- How will TV content be created and distributed?

October 23, 2007
7 PM Networking, 7:30 PM Panel

Fox Studios - Zanuck Theatre, Century City

The Chairman and CEO of Fox has said that the last few years have been "the most revolutionary period in the history of mass media." TiVo, YouTube, user-generated sites, and Internet distribution are just a few examples of the ways that audiences receive content have changed. How will new technologies change the television broadcast model? Where are new sources of content going to come from (Geico’s cavemen, comic books)? What type of content do audiences want to watch and what are the networks buying? How do the networks build an audience for TV content across platforms?

marmont09.24.2007 | BAR MARMONT -- We kicked off the fall season with September’s Ivy Plus young alumni party at Bar Marmont, aka “Chateau Marmont’s sexy, sinister sister.” The cocktailing-lounging-flirting-laughing continued deep into the night (er... morning) until we were finally kicked out around 2 AM. Nothing like an evening of vodka & cigarettes to start the week off right!

Beneath the butterfly-flecked ceiling (does anyone else find that a little creepy?), tucked into a red-leather booth, digits were exchanged, deals were closed, and dubious propositions were surely made...
